3-4 hours
Classes start at 380,000 IDR per person and can be booked on the studio's website. Price includes instruction, tools, and wood to carve your own mask.
The history of Balinese wood carving can be traced back to the 13th century, when artisans from the Javanese Majapahit Kingdom arrived on the island. By the end of class, we had a much deeper appreciation for the work and craftsmanship that goes into making these intricate masks for barong dances!
The tips and tricks the instructors provide along the way: First, draw the outline of your mask in pencil so you have a two-dimensional outline to reference, and second, always work with slightly damp wood to prevent fissures while carving.
Some of the staff members have limited English-speaking skills.
